DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS (1954)

DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS (1954)

Tagline: Invasion from Outer Space!... Sights too weird to imagine! Destruction too monstrous to escape!

(Sci-fi, Horror, Psychotronic) [G]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I am pretty sure it would have been a G.

This one starts out with a bunch of people hanging out in a bar in Scotland. Only one of them demonstrates any ability to act. The next thing we know a flying saucer lands nearby and a woman dressed in black leather shows up because that is the only kind of clothing they have on Mars apparently. Her name is Nyah and she’s grumpy because she was headed to London and that didn’t work out. The men and women on Mars are at battle and all the men are dying off, so she really needs a bunch of men (or at least one really awesome man) to help repopulate Mars. After killing a few people with a ray gun, and turning them to dust, she ends up finally asking for a volunteer to go with her. That is pretty much all you need to know about this thing. Well, except that maybe it would be interesting for you to know, that she’s also got a robot that appears to be made out of an old refrigerator or washer and dryer parts and it's freakin glorious.

The acting in this thing is just rough, but oddly not as bad as some other movies from the same time. We do get a Hazel Court appearance in this movie and she is probably the best actor or actress who gets a lot of screen time. She was also famous for THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH. The rest of the cast I am not that familiar with.

Also outside of the robot (which was awesome in a goofy way), the rest of the effects are actually decent, considering I’ve reviewed a movie from this era, where the giant alien beasts were shadows of lobsters being held by puppeteers. It sounds like a joke, but no. Anyway, the title is a bit misleading, in that this girl looks nothing like what you would imagine being a devil, and never refers to herself as one. I can only guess they were going for something like having a teacher the kids don’t like in school, and everyone starts referring to her as "demon teacher".
A better title for this one would have been “Un-liked Girl From The Spaceship Over There”. This movie is also plagued with non-sense scientific terms, but you really need to get over that if you are planning on watching any sci-fi today, not just 50's sci-fi.

I have to give this one a 2 out of 7. There is some okay dialog but wow...there are tons of other better more well-rounded 1950s sci-fi flicks out there.
