THE GALLOWS (2015)

THE GALLOWS (2015)

Friday night I got stood up by a friend for plans to hang out. So what better way to spend it than to go see a horror flick shot in a style I can’t believe is even still a real thing (basically found footage). Kidding- I rarely see horror movies at the theaters.

This movie follows the aftermath of a horrific accident that takes play at a high school presentation of "The Gallows". You can pick up some things from the previews, but that is all I am going to say here about that part. 20 years later, the show must go on. Unfortunately the new lead actor sucks, so his friend decides it’s time to sabotage the new version of the play set to happen the following evening.

Right off the bat this movie could have been a LOT better if it wasn’t shot in this “got fired from film school so hand me the camera” style that it is. Essentially Ryan Shoos (also named Ryan in the movie, best known for PRETTY LITTLE LIARS) is shooting this just to document everything for some dumb reason. Even when he drops his camera, it appears all the other people filming this movie had the exact same piece of crap camera he did (because this thing just moves right along). What the heck?

Anyway the movie centers around 4 people, all of which have the same first names in real life as they do in the movie? Writing wasn’t a big deal for this production I guess. Where the film does succeed is the cast. You can tell everyone in this is putting in a solid effort and Kathy Lee Gifford’s daughter, Cassidy Gifford, has a bright future.

The movies advertising crew wants you to think that this killer and his noose are going to be staples moving forward, but unless the people involved in this really just want to punish you with bad writing, you are safe for now. They did however give the main bad guy an iconic look when we do see him, so that was smart. Aside from a few jump out at you moments, there just is not enough here to call this a good flick. Fun from a standpoint maybe, but not good, and this is coming from someone that likes cheesy gore-less horror.
