SELF/LESS

SELF/LESS (2015)

This movie centers around an extremely wealthy man dying of cancer. He is offered a solution to overcome death but the price tags on that, no money can pay for. New body, new life, new problems. In this “take the red pills” action thriller we get some pretty fantastic performances from both Ryan Reynolds (young Damian) and Mathew Good (Albright).

The story line over all feels a bit like we’ve been here before, but the stories intricate details and a huge plot twist at the end separate it from others in the “I will find a way not to die” genre (THE 6TH DAY comes to mind). There are some things in the movie that would normally have lent themselves to an un-natural flow character wise, but those are avoided as well through careful writing. Veteran actress and bada-s Natalie Martinez is also brought in for a pivotal role that not only added emotion where this movie needed it but gave it meaning and purpose. We are also introduced to Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen who plays Anna and does great job adding some humor and balance in the movies second half.

Overall I liked this thing quite a bit, but it is unfortunately not something you run to the theaters for. It’s an interesting REDBOX or Netflix choice along with the “insert Jai Courtney featured film title here” flicks of the world. Well aside from TERMINATOR : GENISYS and IFRANKENSTEIN because those damn movies killed it.
