FAULTS (2014)
This movie is about an expert in mind control in cults
getting basically begged to handle the daughter of an older couple who is now
heavily into a cult called “Faults”. Unfortunately, this expert is pretty damn
broke and so he takes a job he really doesn’t want to make ends meet. Loaded
with bits of full-blown comedy to spooky eerie stuff that challenges the
recesses of thought, Faults is pretty solid. I should be clear here, there is
nothing in this that you wouldn’t catch in any crime show on mainstay networks.
So what is different? Well, the freaky ending for one. I can’t say how much this
movie had me guessing as to what was really happening.
Secondly, the performance
of Mary Elizabeth Winstead (as Claire) in this thing, is why she frequently
makes stops on my TOP 10 ACTRESSES of the year list. Like she camps out there
and makes marshmallows n everything. It’s just one more reason, that in spite of the fact that I LOVE a lot of
Tarantino’s films that I still want to kick him in the metaphorical nuts, for
not giving Winstead a real role in DEATH PROOF (and of course as a result it
turned out to be his dumbest movies of all time).
Anyway, rant over.
Leland Orser (who is in every TAKEN installment ever
made) also delivers in this movie as Ansel and had me both irritated and laughing at times. The rest of the cast is
credible as well. Storyline wise I thought we could have squeezed a bit more
out of the dialog between Ansel and Claire on deeper subjects. Because this
didn’t happen some of the movie feels disjointed.
You can probably stream this but it is not for the faint of heart.
