DAWN (2014)
This is a short film directed by Rose McGowan which packs a
punch from it’s opening to the very last scene. As a cautionary tale against
disregarding our children or passively raising them, Dawn features a young teen
longer to be freed from her parental prison. Let me first say, while the
details are not really approached the act of leaving a teen at home for the
weekend in almost any era, is risky as hell. Tara Lynne Barr (God Bless
America) does a great job in this thing and the rest of the cast is stellar as
well. The film also features Hanna Marks who despite her young age has been all
over in everything from THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN to THE RUNAWAYS.
Rose does a
great job of capturing the early 60’s in this piece and the sets are as
nostalgic as they are creepy. Even the lighting in this thing is well done. I
am not quite sure how would be more tripped out watching this, parents or
teens? What I do know is that once the tension got going, I felt more
un-settled than captured by the playful soundtrack and trip to see “Lover Come
Back.”
This isn’t my kind of movie (and I can’t in good faith recommend that
people run out and see it), but if I am a film student, or a parent I am probably
sitting down with the whole family on this one and using it as a conversation
piece.
