THE GIFT (2000)
Because Hollywood is loaded with originality, there is
actually another movie called “THE GIFT” coming out this year, but this is the
one made in 2000. Given the all-star cast what actually made me curious about
this one mainly because Cate Blanchett is one of the best actresses like ever.
The movie is about a woman who lives in a small town and does readings for
people using cards, but when that doesn’t work (and it seems like almost never
or it ends in freakin disaster) the clues to the future get revealed to her in
a dream. Once the town cheater is murdered, the entire town is a potential
suspect as the plot thickens and the anger and fear comes to surface. No one in
this movie gives a bad performance, but some roles are noticeably over-matched and
feel out of place. At the top of the list acting wise Giovanni Ribisi (AVATAR,
SELMA) steals the show, but Keanu Reeves proves once again in this when you
don’t write him boring he isn’t. Unfortunately his character in this needs some
damn jail time, counseling and then to be sent off to Tom Hanks Island to hang
out with volleyballs. Cate Blanchette is simply powerful in this film as well
as Greg Kinner drawing us in and back to the edge of our seats with suspense.
Star power sometimes turns me off from watching certain movies, but this should
have been something I checked out earlier.
I can’t recommend buying this,
because for me it wouldn’t be a “watch
over and over” type of movie, but
Director Sam Raimi hit a home run with this if you like suspenseful
mystery thrillers.
