COOL WORLD (1992)

COOL WORLD (1992)

The previews for this thing back, when it came out, made me want to run to the theater. On top of that throw in critically acclaimed director Ralph Bakshi (LORD OF THE RINGS, FIRE & ICE, WIZARDS) and it looks like we’ve got ourselves a fun ride.

This one centers around a comic creator Jack Deebs (played by Gabriel Byrne) who is basically and secretly sexually obsessed with his own character Holli Would (voiced by Kim Basinger). Holli wants out of cartoon land or “COOL WORLD”, and into the real world and Jack is pretty much down with that. Detective Frank Harris (Brad Pitt, the only human who’s been in COOL WORLD for any amount of time) wants to stop him because there seem to be some rules about all this. Oddly there are no rules about cartoons chasing each other around with axes or doing just about anything else.

This felt, and obviously was the creator's attempt to ROGER RABBIT their way into the hearts and minds of adults. Unfortunately, it’s almost so un-connected and quite frankly idiotic that I was unable to find anyone that liked this thing for what it was. Brad Pitt was still up and coming when this was made but several talented people’s time and effort were wasted here, making for just a jumbled mess of a film that didn’t even make half its production costs back. Having said all that what we did get out of COOL WORLD was probably the 2nd best soundtrack for a film with 2D animation ever (HEAVYMETAL is #1). The opening credits song “Play With Me” by the Thompson Twins alone is worth listening to as well as many other songs that show up in this.

The film does some at times nifty visuals combining artwork set props with live actors and 2D animation, and we do get a Michele Abrams (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) sighting. For some reason, she seems to have dropped off the acting radar after 99. Anyway, aside from Lonette (voiced by Candi Milo) there is almost no one in this movie we care about and even Holli is mostly annoying. If you have to watch this movie, it’s most likely a one-way ride from the cliffs of curiosity to the splatter of regret.

I can't give this thing any better than a 1 out of 7 and it might even be worse than that.
