WISHMASTER (1997)
Oh boy. This freakin
movie. Horror fans are probably better off just forgetting there was an attempt
at a plot because this script is a disaster. It basically takes old dialog from
the 80’s TV show LOTTERY and mixes it with both past and modern version twists
on Aladdin or even older Twilight Zone episodes (if you really want to get out
the borrowed idea looking glass). Essentially Dijinn are creatures made to live
in the world between angels and men but basically they really just wanna take
over earth. A Persian sorcerer is getting his party jacked up so he decides to
trap the Dijinn in a stone…which of course gets broken and in the modern day
world there is only one really way to get them back in it.
Where this film really wins over horror fans is the fact that just about
everyone and their brother is in this thing. Robert Englund (as Raymond
Beaumont not FREDDY), Kane Hodder (as Merritt’s Guard not JASON), Angus Scrimm
(as the narrator not THE TALL MAN) and on and on add credibility, but even more
over the top is that this movie is a return to the practical effects hay day. I
am not kidding, there is just some crazy
stuff happening in this from almost funny to “the winner of FACE OFF is!!!”.
Yeah nuts. About 3 minutes into this movie you will also be acutely aware that
Wes Craven is nearby and he brought everyone in the effect business that he
could find. For that I can give this movie a 4 out of 7 but man this plot is
just all jacked out and doesn’t make any freakin sense. I can see even hardcore
horror fans scratching their heads. This movie also practically begs you to
hate the ending.
