THE SNOW CREATURE (1954)

THE SNOW CREATURE (1954)

Tagline: Himalayan Monster captured 20,000 Feet above the Earth!

(Sci-Fi, Horror, We Found Something Dangerous, Bring It To America) [G]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I am pretty sure it would have been a G.

In a nutshell this movie is about an expedition to the Himalayas that goes bad because that’s a freakin terrible place to try and find plants. It does not take long before the locals on the expedition start telling tales of a Yeti in the area and now we have to deal with all kinds of baloney. Apparently in the 50’s the only thing you were taught to do if you found something that kills people was to take it to America.

A couple interesting things about this film -

1) It’s only 71 minutes long, you won’t die or anything after having watched it.

2) It is apparently the first movie ever made about a Yeti. So that ought to count for something.

3) I can’t stand the narration.

I don’t want to say too much here, but this thing does have some “what the cow” moments (especially the part where they capture the Yeti. It’s almost unforgivably stupid). Unfortunately, none of the performances or storylines in the film stand out as a must-see or even want to see. Sometimes just because something is the first of its kind, doesn’t mean it has inherent brilliance. I don’t want to rip on this movie more than necessary as it does have some moments, but overall I can’t recommend it. There are much better black-and-white efforts from the abyss out there.

I give this one a 3 out of 7 just because I can see why some people would revel in the nostalgia. This Yeti design would have been better if they had at least done some fur on the face.
