SHAKMA (1990)

SHAKMA (1990)

This movie is about a baboon that just goes freakin monkey crap crazy after being injected by an experimental drug designed to make primates less aggressive (so, yeah that doesn’t work out). Throwing in a twist several students and a few teachers at this research facility are throwing an all night role-playing game in the building and phones and keys seemingly are almost impossible to come by.

If you are like me baboon’s might kind of freak out you out anyway, but seeing one pissed is just really uncomfortable. It’s really difficult to complain about the effects in this because a real baboon (sometimes even pissing it off in real life) was used and the practical effects are well done. You can catch this one on Netflix and given it’s very slow moving but eerie ending, it makes this a great addition to your horror movie marathon. There are a few slow moving parts to this, but other elements pay off.

Even though well known and long standing actress Amanda Wyss (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, CSI, BETTER OFF DEAD) takes most of the dialog as the female lead it isn’t enough to fix some of the horrible dialog, (I mean extra-bad) and the very mediocre acting. For an early 90’s B-horror flick you can see why this thing probably fits best into the cult favorites category, but it will make you probably not want to pet any baboons anytime soon.
