ORCA (1977)
First off I should say if
you can see the graphic, it’s pretty ridiculous. The killer whale in this movie
is big, but it is not as big as it is in the graphic. Now that this has been
cleared up we can start.
This movie is about a man who decides he wants to catch a killer whale alive. He winds up blowing it badly and now one of them is after him, the people on his boat, his cat, the whole freakin town. This whale is just full-blown pissed. The overall story here is a lot deeper than we got in JAWS and that lead a lot of people to say this movie was either better than JAWS or at least could be compared to it. What a lot of people may not know is that it is not the shark that is the alpha predator of the ocean, it’s the Orca which have been known to kill sharks.

Anyway, in the area of horror, this one is
pretty low on the “I am scared” register, but it is a highly emotional and sad
tale that definitely stuck fear into anyone riding Dumbledore’s boat. Why
Dumbledore? Well Richard Harris who played Dumbledore in the original Harry
Potter film is the main character, Captain Nolan. Fans of Bo Derek were
probably also flocking to the theater to see this in 77 when it came out, but
there really was no need (she is only in a few scenes).
I also have to give
this movie a lot of credit for its effects. JAWS is a true classic but nothing
in this movie looks nearly as jacked out as some of the animatronics in JAWS.
For anyone wanting to ruin their trip to Sea World, this is probably your
movie. I give this one a 4 out of 7.
