NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)

“They’re coming to get you Barbara…” – Johnny.

How freaky was this movie. Well apparently getting chased and eaten by zombies has never been the same to some. This is the genuine grand daddy of them all. Of course there were a few zombies movies before this, but nothing even close to as haunting or graphic. One of the most successful independent films of all time NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD holds up to this day as a frightening  reminder of shocking horror done right. Judith O’Dea does a fantastic job as Barbara in the film and is still acting to this day after a 25 year break between 78’ and 03’. The premise was pretty simple. In the 60’s Venus was pretty easy to get to so we sent a satellite there and bam…it came back with enough radioactivity to bring the dead to life and gave them the human flesh munchies.  Well at least that is the theory in the film anyway.

For me this is the single most haunting black and white film I have ever seen.  Oddly the hero of the film was an English Professor in real life and also appeared in BEAT STREET in the 80’s. I don’t want to give away who it is if you haven’t for some reason not been able to see this movie. Definitely add this to your horror movie marathon if it’s not already there.

You can catch this one on Netflix right now and maybe even (like a lot of older black and white horror) on YouTube. The movie has been public domain since it was released. I give NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD a 7 out of 7. Not for the faint of heart.
