MIMIC 2 (2001)

MIMIC 2 (2001)

Mimic 2 is about a Judas Breed giant (almost human looking) cockroach that survived the events of Mimic part 1 and is now bent on impregnating a school teacher in New York (no, I am not making that up). There is also a plot line that explains that the Judas Breed is trying to kill its top predator “man”. Ultimately however, it’s a giant cockroach that can’t leave Remi Panos (played by Alix Koromzay, THE HAUNTING, CHILDREN OF THE CORN : ISSAC’S RETURN) or any of the dudes she’s talked to in the last week, alone. This one does not have all the over the top effects that the first installment did, but there are some parts in this thing that are just as gross. I do miss Mira Sorvino in this one but at least we get a familiar face (Alix Koromzay was also in MIMIC). The rest of the cast is a lot less convincing than I would have liked them to have been but there is nothing absolutely terrible here either.

Part 2 in the horror genre in general is always tough because there is a tendency to try and do too much. MIMIC 2 is stripped down a bit and it works. Director Jean de Segonzac (mostly known for his work in TV crime dramas) really made sure a lot of ridiculously odd dialog about cockroaches was put into this movie. Some of its content is untrue, but it is in part. For example we are told when you cut off the head of a cockroach it can live for 9 days. That is actually only partly true… cockroaches can live for weeks without their heads. Now that you are completely creeped out, this one gets a 4 out of 7.
