HARDWARE (1990)
This movie is about a space
marine who gets a hold of the head of a cyborg that he calmly gives to his
girlfriend who then decides she needs to paint like the American flag (no- I am
not kidding). Of course since this is sci-fi horror it rebuilds itself and decides
that everything needs to die (or at least everything it sees). This cyborg is
basically like the Swiss Army Knife of terminators and is just as freakin hard
to kill. In fact it’s so hard to kill that it is almost annoying. While the
movie itself takes on a really simple premise the acting is pretty great. I
also really liked the cyberpunk feel this had to it and it had a decent and
memorable soundtrack.
HARDWARE is somewhat
sexually charged but that acting in some parts is so freaking creepy on the
part of the pervert in the movie you almost feel like he might really be that
way. Stacey Travis does really well in the role of the girlfriend and is just as
“I will kick a robot’s metal head off” as Sarah Connor but she is pretty
unlikable as the movie wears on. I enjoyed some of the cooler secondary
characters but there is just enough “what the crap” in the movie to make me not
want to watch it multiple times. Needless to say for some this is undoubtedly a
cult favorite and to that end it deserves at least a 3 out of 7. Just enough
slasher-ness to make it a middle of the road film for any horror movie
marathon.
