SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK (2013)
I have probably seen more
non-American productions this year than I have American which is extremely
rare. Admittedly marketing works and if you throw an awesome-looking cover on
your DVD or streaming service graphic, you are going to get my attention.
In a nut shell this movie is basically about a group keeping people from earth through supremacy and fear. In some cases for good reason (the planet was basically jacked up in a horrific cosmic incident) but Captain Harlocks crew believes he has the answer to returning the human race to earth. There are some twists in this one that bring richness to the TITAN AE-ish storyline and for many that was a huge problem with this thing.

There are a lot of
sections in this movie that not only don’t matter but really drag this thing
out. It is one thing when you have a plot line that takes you places that you
need to go to care about the characters. This one does that but for all the
wrong characters. Overall we get what we came for. With dazzling graphics,
brilliant chase scenes and just freaking awesome space battles this is a
stunning visual masterpiece worth watching just for that alone.
Hats off to director
Shinji Aramaki and the animation team. I have to say this one lands in the
middle of the road for me.
I give it a 4 out of 7.
