THE WOLFMAN (2010)
In this one we have a
bunch of great actors with a really dislikable storyline. Some scenes just don’t seem to be even important to the movie. Lawrence Talbot's mother is killed. His father
is sent to an insane asylum. When his brother's fiancée, Gwen tracks him down
to help find her love (that has gone missing). Lawrence finds his father after
going to their estate to find his brother has been mauled to death, (why) and
then sets out to find his brother's murderer. Something is jacking up a lot of
people in town, like basically shredding them to pieces. Now happy go lucky
Lawrence whose family life is just peachy must find the killer. There is also
an inspector on the case, so this ought to go well.
Story wise this thing is
just a mess, but we are giving some great performances especially from Benecio
Del Toro and Emily Blunt. The sets are pretty amazing and this movie has that
dark gloomy “we are going to get killed” feeling you want in a horror movie. I
think for these reasons the result we get is a very middle of the road story
that takes away from the greatness that could have been this effort. I will
also say the effects are pretty good (not THE HOWLING good) but pretty good, just
at times very un-necessary. Good example, watch the fingers during the movies
big transformation scene, it’s cool looking, but it make zero sense.
Overall I loved the look
and feel of this film and it does get back to the old style “I am a werewolf,
but mostly on my face” look of Universal’s past. It should be noted, that this
is also a Universal film, so it is by no meant “a B movie”.
