OOGA BOOGA (2013)
Okay there are a few
Charles Band titles I follow. KILLJOY and PUPPET MASTER probably being the most
well-known. SO when I found out he directed this, I decided to give it a shot
(turns out that was pretty unfortunate). In this movie we have a jerk of a kids
show host who dresses as a hog who is promptly fired after basically being too
drunk to perform. He then decides to go into the “I am a freakin racist” doll
business but not before he gives his only friend Devin (who is African American
which is just one of many oddities about this thing) a larger doll named “OOGA
BOOGA”. Devin (played by Wade F Wilson a Hollywood newcomer) then goes to a
store that winds up being robbed and winds up getting killed by a racist cop.
Apparently bad slurpee machines have a way of helping you get into a doll and
becoming a vengeful 16 inch killing machine.
While there are some
interesting concepts in this movie overall it’s pretty flat out odd. One thing
that is touted about the film is that OOGA BOOGA is so outspoken in a comical
way, only in the DVD copy I watched he doesn’t talk at all? I am not sure it would
have helped, and it is even more strange that since OOGA BOOGA is Devin, why do
they not act at all the same other than both wanting Donna (played by Ciarra
Carter which was actually a great casting decision)?
Personally growing up in
basically a ghetto situation and having mostly black friends, the
racist elements in this were just hard to watch. Sure everyone gets their due,
but it just reminds me that this crap still goes on (only in real life OOGA
BOOGA isn’t poking your eyes out with a tiny spear).
Sidenote : Karen Black
must like being in movies with tiny killers. She also appeared in 1975’s
TRILOGY OF TERROR one of the great horror flicks of the past 50 years (also one
of the spookiest ending scenes like freakin ever).
