C.H.U.D. (1984)
When I was a kid there
were a lot of rumors about what was under the sewers, how big they were, all of
that crud. Naturally C.H.U.D. hit the spot playing on the fears of not only us
kids, but of industries that were dumping all kinds of crap in the sewers (just
kidding on that last part).
C.H.U.D. (which has a
duel meaning in the movie) takes place as a bizarre series of murders are
happening beneath New York city. So tell me…it’s um cannibals isn’t it? Of
course it is, screwed up gooey cannibals with light bulbs for eyes. A couple
fairly smart cops (some dumb ones) and a dude who lives under the city and a
photographer are the only ones who seem to care a little about what is going on
and begin to investigate the murders. What they find is that all the people who
live underground already are looking for weapons to defend themselves. One by
one people are getting picked off by mutated cannibal monsters with crazy
teeth.
There are a few great
things about this flick. 1) The effects. Aside from the light bulb eyes, the
monsters are pretty gruesome looking for their time and the use of practical
effects on the body parts etc are pretty stellar and un-cheesy which is just
really out of place given that plot wise this has B-movie written all over it.
2) John Goodman is in the movie very briefly as a cop who can’t take a hint
eating at a dinner who is then mauled by the C.H.U.D.-tastic. 3) Bad pot holes.
Apparently the pot holes in the streets of New York are so bad they can
actually make a delivery truck just explode.
The bad. Unfortunately
there are a few really bad plot issues in this one including the ending. Not to
give too much away, but there is nothing they accomplished in this that lead me
to believe all the creatures or even more than a few are actually dead. The
others I will let rest, did I mention John freakin Goodman (if you don’t know
who he is, he was the dad on ROSEANNE, but is also Scully from MONSTERS INC.).
Overall I have to give
C.H.U.D. a 3 out of 7 because it takes
so freakin long to get going, having said that, it is still probably safe to
throw in the old classic horror collection.
