PUPPET MASTER 4 : THE DEMON (1993)
So the tagline on this
one is “when bad puppets turn good”. This is where I feel the series started
getting all jacked out. Rather than embracing the more horror based themes of
the first 3 installments PUPPET MASTER 4 comes across more as an action
adventure film from the early 80’s. The cheese level in this one is so high it
is almost hard to watch at times, because despite the fact that we are dealing
with puppets, if you got this far you had certain expectations.
This time the puppet
duties are handed off to Rick (played by Gordon Currie (who has appeared in
everything from FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII to 3 LEFT BEHIND movies as
the anti-christ) who’s first bright idea is to play laser-tag with the puppets.
Because we all know that secretly most guys just want to play laser tag with
killer puppets “turned good” rather than hang out with Chandra West? Really
google her…then get back to me.
Anyway demons (yes I said
demons) are trying to kill whatever the heck brings these puppets to life.
These are not your Dr. WHO devil looking demons by the way, they are goofy
looking puppets themselves who will throw animated magic all over your freaking
house. Anyway all craziness aside this movie really should have not been part
of the series in general.
A lot of people will be pissed I said that if they
love this stuff, but I would have rather seen an entirely new series if they
were planning to head in this direction. I can say that casting here was NOT a
problem. Teresa Hill (as Lauren) is great, there is a lot of fun stuff going on
here, just not really all that horror. I would say COMMANDO was more
frightening.
Timeline wise this one
should be watched after PUPPET MASTER II if you don’t want to confuse the crap
out of yourself. Note : There are currently 10 PUPPET MASTER movies with the
last one coming out in 2012. At last word Charles Band and Full Moon
Entertainment have “0” plans of stopping any time soon.
I give this movie a 3 out
of 7. I will watch it again sometime if my Netflix queue ever winds down, but
it is not the best this series has to offer. Rating
Definition – What? This movie was not what you expected. You can not decide if
this movie was good or bad but you know there were a few redeemable qualities
about it. If you can remember what they were, you might be talked into watch it
again.
