FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009)
So after FREDDY VS JASON
both franchises were both looking for a direction to go in. After some rights
issues and studio wrangling FRIDAY THE 13TH was given new life via
director Marcus Nispel who has an affinity for horror but was also blamed for
“crap-tizing” CONAN THE BARBARIAN, so there you go. Anyway, this one starts off
just jumping right into the beginning of what we didn’t see in the original
series until the very end of part I. Some things were changed but the overall
feel of this thing is a lot closer to the core material than I expected. A lot
of the goofy nuances and even some of the age old horror movie moral lessons
are explored down to a somewhat predictable but satisfying ending. I didn’t
hear about this movie getting much attention when it came out but there is so
much done right here that is pretty much a must for any fan of the original
franchise. Unlike some of its predecessors this one is for the most part well
acted with the likes of Danielle
Panabaker (SKY HIGH, SHARK, BONES), and Jared Padalecki (SUPERNATURAL).
The
movie is shot in 3 parts essentially with the first being the quickest but
essential to the rest of the plot (sarcasm). There are also a lot of elements
that clear up from a logical standpoint some of the “what the heck” moments in
the first series but the approach feels almost too intellectual. We get shown
how Jason always knows where you are and how he gets around, but all we really
needed to know was that “Jason is always right behind you and well within range”.
There
are also a few issues even with the explanations that pop up making it almost
appear as if we need like 2 or 3 Jasons and that one of them has a car. I never
minded this in the old series because they were not taking these things
seriously, but this one does, so the lack of attention to detail stands out.
Overall this movie is a huge success in my opinion but certainly isn’t the best
of the series. For that you will have to read the reviews on the other
installments in October.
I
give this one a 5 out of 7. Rating
definition : VERY GOOD This movie leaves you with that feeling that
although everything may not be okay, girls can kick butt and one man can save
the world with either one bullet left in the chamber some special power he
discovered 5 minutes ago. This movie is a good time and makes you wonder how many
people you can tell about its awesomeness the next day at work.
