UPSIDE DOWN (2012)

UPSIDE DOWN (2012)

Tagline: Love will change the way we see the world.

(Drama, Fantasy, Nice Steps) [PG-13]

We're 90 percent water, right? So I've combined upper and lower inversion with a hyperinfusion, yeah? Yeah.

Sometimes my top ten movie lists are victimized by the fact that I haven’t seen certain films so I don’t have a reference for them yet. I can say now the UPSIDE DOWN would have definitely cracked my top 10.

This movie is about two worlds that have their own gravity systems. You personally gravitate towards whatever planet you are born on. If you go to the other planet for too long you burn up. To be honest, if you are super analytical you will have issues with this movie, but the general idea is this story is what I just said. So you may want to tune everything else you think science knows out because it will screw up your enjoyment of the movie. Anyway, Eden (Kirsten Dunst) meets Adam (Jim Sturgess – 21, CLOUD ATLAS) when they are both kids, and the two wind up falling in love. The “richer” of the two worlds hates the other and Eden is badly injured which causes her to lose all memory of Adam…years later Adam has finally come up with a way to try and win her back.

Okay enough of the love stuff….if you can imagine the best effects in INCEPTION on crack that is what you have with UPSIDE DOWN. This film is so freakin brilliantly shot, it blows your mind so often that you can’t even see straight at the end of it. To be honest I have no idea why this movie wasn’t much much bigger of a deal than it was when it came out. I mean the number of “holy awesomeness” visual moments in this movie make THE MATRIX look like it was shot with pin-hole cameras.

Outside of some of the best visuals like EVER, there are some really good acting moments in this one and the most surprising isn’t by either of the leads (which do great as well). I am talking about Timothy Spall (that’s right Wormtail from Harry Potter) and he is EPIC in this. This movie is well paced and for the most part, well thought out. We do have a few issues as mentioned above if you visit some planet that has another planet on top of it with an opposing gravity system or whatever. However, on the merits of superb film making this movie is spectacularly triumphant in its execution.

Weak points..the brief cheesy intro and the whacky but acceptable ending.

Strong points – the part where you opened your eyes and had your mind blown for 94 minutes.

I give this film a solid 6 out of 7.
