THE LAST STAND (2013)

THE LAST STAND  (2013)

So Arnold and Sly both decided that it wasn’t too late to put out movies this year. They decided right. THE LAST STAND is a refreshing nod to the late ’80s and early 90’s action flicks that relied far less on actual plot than they did carefully placed one-liners. THE LAST STAND also has Jaimie Alexander which THOR fans will recognize as "Sif". Unlike its genre, this film actually does have some pretty smart twists and turns but ultimately plays out like a fun afternoon. It is also a testament to Arizona and how this state doesn’t get enough credit for being just a little bad-a-s.

The plot is about a feared cartel boss escaping the Feds and deciding to drive through a small border town to get into Mexico. The problem here is his team has killed a few people they should not have and Schwarzenegger and his newly deputized police force are not cool with that (not at all). At this point you are probably thinking, eh, I don’t like movies like this. Fair enough, but at the very least it’s worth a rental on Red Box. For Fast & The Furious fans, there are also some pretty well-designed car chases but of course, this is not Fast & Furious.

Forest Whitaker does a great job as an FBI agent, Johnny Knoxville I thought might be useless in this actually does a good job and has all the weapons. Eduardo Noriega is exceptional as Gabriel Cortez. The secondary villain is also very well portrayed by Peter Stormare (probably most well known for being the lovable Russian in “ARMAGEDDON”) is also nice and hate-worthy which tells you the writers actually paid close attention on this one.  With all of its upsides THE LAST STAND isn’t going to knock you into the stratosphere in the “wow” I need to buy this department, but blowing it off isn’t the greatest idea ever.

I give it a 4 out of 7.
