ADVENTURES OF THE
LIVING CORPSE (2011)
Based on a comic of the same name, this computer animated
movie is about a zombie that is burdened with a conscience (kind of like the
main zombie WARM BODIES only a bit more sinister and aggressive when he has to
throw down). The Living Corpse is looking for his son but literally has to go
through hell and a bunch of other zombies to find him.
There are a few really well done things in this movie. First
off Micheal Villar does an outstanding job voicing The Living Corpse. The
design from some aspects is pretty good and the soundtrack pacing is also above
average. We are also given a pretty solid and unique premise so the idea itself
gets high marks.
Then we get to the not so good stuff. Choosing to go with
the STAR WARS CLONE WARS style animation only made the movie feel very
out-dated (and not in the good Grindhouse way). While I commend the work put
into it, the final result not only seems to do an injustice to the comic
itself, but it comes across as unintentionally campy (episodes of Veggie Tales
have been done far better). I haven’t read all the issues of this comic but the
storyline itself seems to stumble especially getting out of the gate and in the
middle. I also wanted to jump into the movie and kick Worthless Merk right in
the head (like we all want to kick Kuzco in the head at the beginning of
Emperor’s New Groove). I will say the ending was pretty satisfying and I
wouldn’t mind checking out a second attempt at this.
I’d suggest sticking with the comics for the time being.
I give this movie a 3 out of 7.
