HOWLING III (1987)

HOWLING III (1987)

Tagline: The "Howling" terror continues...

(Horror, Comedy, Utter Nonsense) [PG-13]

Note: This movie was also called HOWLING III: THE MARSUPIALS.

Doubt it is. Unless they know we're intercepting. "Werewolf was sighted near village of Leovich. Three villagers killed. Special army team are tracking monster." Well. Do we tell the powers that be?

So after the legendary staple of all werewolf movies “THE HOWLING” was released, part II although it had its moments wasn’t what most horror fans would have seen as a good direction for the series. Part III was put out seemingly in a rush to rescue things. The film does have some fairly strong casting especially the little-known actress Imogen Annesley as the lead.

Here we get a ridiculous "werewolf nuns" introduction that has nothing to do with anything. Then we get werewolf babies, which in early scenes seems to be a huge deal, and later seems to be pretty much a normal thing. In a nutshell, the main story revolves around a female werewolf who falls in love with a dude who works in the movie business. The level of incompetence in the film would have been a lot more comical if it wasn’t taking itself so seriously. There is even a part in the movie where the male lead, Lee takes his werewolf girlfriend to a horror movie. They kind of make fun of how crappy the makeup effects are and how the werewolf in the movie looks. The problem is when we actually see werewolves in this movie they look just as crappy as the werewolves the characters in the movie were making fun of.

So anyways after Jim Hensen finally left the set (poking fun at how muppet-like the werewolves were), the film winds up in an attempt to pay tribute to the ending of the first, one and falls pretty much flat on its face. I remember hating this when it came out and honestly did like it a bit better this time around.

HOWLING fans already know this was a pile of garbage covering up for what was mostly the start of the pile of garbage that was part II. As much as I liked Imogen in this role (by the way, she never had much of a movie career but did a lot of TV stuff) she can’t rescue this poorly imagined and directed disaster.

I give this film a 2 out of 7.
