FROGS (1972)
It depends on what you like, but most would agree the horror
of the 70’s was a LOT creepier than the horror (which took a campy turn for the
better in my opinion) in the 80’s. In most cases this type of low budget “not
even trying” movie would have been all over it when it came to hiring bad
actors, not this movie, Sam Elliot and Ray Milland are pretty exceptional in
their roles. Unfortunately they are brutalized by some of the worst dialog and
story line ever put on film. A better name for this movie would have been “When
Animals Crawl Slowly Towards You”. The “frogs” hardly do anything except maybe
throw some really bad makeup on you between breaks on the set.
The movie revolves around a rich family trying to rid frogs
by poisoning everything in sight. Then a photographer (Sam Elliot) Pickett is
apparently given a pamphlet by some 70’s environmental group called “You And
Your Frog Hating Friends Should All Die” and told to recite it for the rest of
the movie whenever the camera pans even close to him.
Overall I love campy crappy movies. Sadly this one doesn’t
even cut it as classic garbage falling into the so bad it’s good category. This
one is simply a poorly conceived waste of your time. Not much else to say here,
but it is probably a must for Sam Elliot fans…yes the Sam Elliot from THE HULK,
GHOSTRIDER, ROADHOUSE, TOMBSTONE, MASK and on and on.
I give this movie a 1 out of 7. I almost gave this thing a 0 rating, but out of respect for Sam, we are just going to leave it at a 1.
