DEAD SPACE : DOWNFALL (2008)

DEAD SPACE :  DOWNFALL (2008)

Based on the video games Starz decided to put out a 2D animated horror space oddity called DEAD SPACE. I don’t think the producers were really going for this, but the movie basically reminds me of HEAVY METAL (probably closer to the 2000 version than the 1981 version). Only instead of a green ball and tons of overdone nudity, you get a Christmas ornament shaped artifact in space which basically does exactly the same thing as the green ball in HEAVY METAL. This kinda goes into my theory that everything awesome is one of 2 things. 1) Based on something from the 80’s or 2) Based on some adaptation of a Twilight Zone episode.

Anyway if you like horror, spider like alien zombies and Titan AE, this is your movie. Unfortunately there are some things they left out which I consider pretty much a big deal. The first major problem with the film is that you are not rooting for anyone. Almost NO ONE in the film has any character and if they do they will be dead soon (the movie is called DEAD SPACE). The second major problem in the movie is that unlike both HEAVY METAL and TITAN AE, there is no worthwhile soundtrack in this one. Really? It’s a video game and you couldn’t come up with some tunes for it? My suggestion, throw in the soundtrack to either TITAN AE or HEAVY METAL and watch this then. You will be a happy person (again, if you like horror and either one of the movies I mentioned).

This movie drags at times but only because of its repetition. It does have some really cool concepts though my favorite of which is the laser weapons that slice stuff up really quickly.  For even bothering to keep up the 2D horror action animation genre I give this movie a 4 out of 7.

Rating Definition : REALLY GOOD – This movie was better than expected after critics killed it. It does have that “I think I may have seen this before feeling” but you haven’t, it’s all in your head. This movie was likely redeemed by some amazing actor or actress like Hugh Jackman or Kate Beckinsale.
