DEAD SPACE : AFTERMATH (2011)

DEAD SPACE :  AFTERMATH (2011)

It takes forever to make 2D animated movies that are any good, so this one came out 3 years after its predecessor. It also mixes in some CGI animation styles for the “non-flashback” portions of the film. The story centers around the surviving crew of an investigatory ship called the O’Bannon. This is the same ship that comes to investigate the USG Ishimura at the end of DOWNFALL (see a pattern here). Much like the first installment this one is full blown space horror and does a pretty decent job of pacing as it goes into each story through the survivors eyes. I actually enjoyed the storytelling in this one quite a bit better than in DOWNFALL, but the character were not much more likeable and a lot of it over focuses on Nickolas Kuttner’s hallucinations about his dead daughter. This would have been effective in a much lighter dose. The film also dives into Dr. Cho’s  (one of the survivors) background a bit but it isn’t good news. She is basically having an affair. So after giving reasons you shouldn’t like any of these people it is very hard to get upset about their fates.

Overall this film fails on several points. The CGI is pretty unforgivable especially for a movie made in 2011. I get that these guys are trying to make the most scary video/movies they can in this style but you need an actual character that lives that people care about. Frankly after DOWNFALL there wasn’t a reason for many fans to return to the series. That is why for the most part you can watch this one for free. As far as I know there are no current plans to make another one, but the first 2 were 3 years apart, so there is still time. For fans of horror animation this is probably a must add to your collection but for people just looking for a kick butt animated horror flick, this one probably isn’t going to win you over.
I give this movie a 3 out of 7.

Rating definition
- WHAT? This movie wasn't what you expected. You can not decide if it was good or bad but you know there were a few redeemable qualities about it. If you can remember what they were you might be talked into seeing it again.
