THE ICE ROAD (2021)

THE ICE ROAD (2021)

Tagline: This mission is on thin ice.

(Action, Drama, Thriller) [PG-13]

Mount up. Use the head now, if you have to. We're on a Bull Run!

In this one after a mining accident, a group of ice truckers and former ice truckers Mike and Gurty McCann decide it’s worth an extremely dangerous trip with massive pieces of equipment to the mine before over 20 trapped miners run out of air. It doesn’t take long before things start to go really bad on the trip and the drivers discover something very nefarious is going on.

First off some of the reviews saying truckers are pissed about how unrealistic this movie is have got to be just blowing smoke. My dad was a trucker and his goofy a-s probably would have loved this damn thing. If I was watching a show about nurses and I was a nurse, I wouldn’t need it to be realistic. I am not watching ANY movie for realism. If I wanted that, I could look out the window or take a walk down the block.

Liam Neeson plays the movie's main trucker, Mike. Speaking of Neeson, this dude has been in just a ton of movies lately. As of me writing this, he has 137 acting credits. By way of comparison, Nicolas Cage who is also in everything is currently at 108 acting credits. Mike’s brother Gurty (played by Marcus Thomas) is a veteran suffering from a condition that seems a lot like something on the autism spectrum. He has mad skill mechanically though and is probably my favorite character in the entire movie. Amber Midthunder plays a criminal slash ice trucker named Tantoo. She is probably most famous for the TV show Roswell, New Mexico, and has had a pretty great start to her career which started in 2001. Laurence Fishburne plays a man named Jim Goldenrod. Jim leads a group of truckers that does ice road runs during the winter, but this is the off-season so most of his crew has already left for the season when he gets the request to help save the miners. I really liked Fishburne in this role but wish he’d have gotten more screen time. Benjamin Walker has a decent outing in this one as Tom Varnay, but the role wasn’t nearly as challenging as some of the other stuff we’ve seen him in (namely ABRAHAM LINCOLN VAMPIRE HUNTER).

As stated before this movie isn’t realistic nor is it trying to be. It’s trying to be wildly entertaining and that is exactly what it is. I really liked this thing and to be honest I was really just expecting a crazy road trip movie with some moose showing up. The whole movie takes place in Canada and not one moose? What the crap?

If you can set aside your zest for real-life situations or desire to see a documentary this is going to be a really crazy really fun time. For me, this was a solid 5 out of 7. It reminded me of late ’80s and early 90’s action movies like DIE HARD on ice. Check out of reality and have yourself some fun.
