KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (2017)
I guess how you view this movie will depend on what you were
expecting from it. A lot like Guy Ritchie’s SHERLOCK HOLMES films this movie is
loaded with quick cuts and extremely brief images, as well as cutaways that
might make it hard to keep up if you are expecting straightforward storytelling. This movie is all over the place regarding its method, but that is all
part of what makes it so wildly entertaining. There isn’t much to say here. KING
ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD is yet another re-telling of the seemingly
thousands of re-tellings of the King Arthur legend. Only this one includes
sirens, the occasional giant snake, tattoos, and even karate. Shockingly it’s
pretty damn fantastic.
The opening sequence is better than most entire movies on
the subject including giant freaking elephants with pyramids on their backs and
all kinds of whacky stuff. While the rest of the movie doesn’t go quite that
far into the realm of giant stuff, the storytelling method gets right to it
and moves extremely fast. This isn’t a slow-burn type of film at all. Complete
with a modern rock-laced soundtrack this thing is just out of control and I am
guessing that is why so many people had an issue with it. We are talking
shooting a scene, that has a flashback and then another flashback within that
flashback while somehow moving forward in the normal flow of the storyline.
Acting wise the cast did an incredible job from Jude Law as a rather convincing Vortigern and Charlie Hunnam (PACIFIC RIM) as Arthur. You actually like quite a few of the characters in this thing. The wardrobes openly reject the dress of the time and basically seem to just double down on whatever the costume designer thought might look cool. While all this is going on the film also manages to hit both very light and very dark tones using both humor and dark magic.
I can see why this movie didn’t do well at the box office. It was quite literally out of the box and I am pretty sure a lot of people just were not ready for that. Overall in spite of its disregard for certain things “King Arthur” is actually quite a brilliant and inventive take on a really cool lore.
