OCTOPUS II : RIVER OF FEAR (2001)
If you read my reviews you probably know
I would watch a just about any movie with a giant “anything” in it. “ATTACK OF
THE GIANT PAPERCLIP FROM SPACE” , I’ll be right there. So naturally at some
point I ended up in the bargain bin movie was and low and behold, OCTOPUS II.
How could anyone get this wrong? By the way… I never saw the first one so this
is a rare “don’t bother starting at the beginning of this series” moment for
me.
The plot revolves around a series of
murders in Hudson River. Every cop in NY seems to be an idiot but Nick who gets
basically called crazy for suggesting the murders are being done by a giant
octopus. Once everyone agrees it’s a giant octopus the Mayor needs a dive team
with explosives to attempt to stop the octopus from ruining the 4th
of July, because damn, you can’t have that happen, not in the Big Apple.
Starring Michael Riley Burke (as Nick
Hatfiled), whose has been in everything pretty much ever, the production team
at least got a bunch of decent actors for this. So for that I have to give them
credit. The chemistry between Nick and Rachel (played by Meredith Morton) is
pretty solid. While no one probably thinks this should have gotten into
theaters rather going direct to video, the production is decent, aside from
maybe the octopus having yellow eyes. The only thing I had a real issue with in
this movie was the ending. We get an ending that would have been fine, but no.
They decide to tack on another half an hour and we end up with another
inexplicable ending that not only doesn’t have anything to do with the rest of
the movie, but highlights the fact that we are never given a reason this
octopus is even around.
Overall this movie is better than a
significant amount of similar movies, but with 1,000’s of movies like this, it
barely gets this flick out of the “bad B-movie range.”
