NIGHT OF THE KILLER BEARS (2023)

NIGHT OF THE KILLER BEARS (2023)

Tagline: Nope.

(Horror, Bears, Something Is Wrong With All These Chicks) [R]

Note: This movie was released on streaming services in the United States in April of 2023. That is why my date reflects 2023 rather than the release date in Thailand which was 2022. The original title was THE WORLD OF KILLING PEOPLE which kind of makes sense if you watch this thing because almost everyone is nuts. This movie was not given an MPA rating, but it definitely would have been a [R].

You guys have serious relationship issues.

In this one, Aim and Win invite their 3 other friends on a getaway at a remote hotel resort. As it turns out a year earlier their friend Keng was killed and Chang is basically having a meltdown over the fact that the rest of the group has decided not to talk about it and move on. Chang literally blames Win for their friend’s death. It doesn’t take long before they start getting picked off one by one and it becomes clear that no one is safe because friendship doesn’t mean anything to these people and there are sinister axe-wielding characters with bear heads running around. Yep. That is the plot. Don’t ask me any questions, I can’t help you.

First off, in spite of what some websites are trying to tell you, there is NOTHING funny about this movie at all outside of one tiny sequence where one of the killer bears grunts because it doesn’t want to go back to chasing people around. If you do think it’s funny in general, it might be because something is wrong with you. Like you are drunk or otherwise impaired. You might want to stop reading this review and have a psych exam. This doesn’t mean the film has nothing interesting about it. It does succeed in being interesting. I don’t understand everyone’s motives for what they are doing, but Win and Tony seem to be the only ones with semi-decent personalities. Not saying that Tony is full of wise choices being a pothead and all.

This film leaves me with a lot of questions and it’s not even going to try and answer them. The opening sequence doesn’t appear to be linked to anything in this movie. It might serve to show you that you are in for a bunch of craziness and that for some reason every chick in this movie has assassin skills for no apparent reason. Seriously, there must be something in the water in Thailand, because this movie is bonkers and everyone aside from Win and Tony just laughs and smiles at the weirdest moments like they are possessed by a psychotic Ronald McDonald. It appears that the bear heads everyone is wearing are just handmade costume heads, but all the kill sequences are noticeably middle-tier CGI.

Acting wise Sananthachat Thanapatpisal who plays Aim does fine in this for what it is and shows quite a bit of range. The only other movie I have seen her in was IRON MASK. She is uncredited in that film. Patchata Jan-Ngern gets a good amount of screen time as Win, but I haven’t seen any of this dude’s other movies. Panisara Rikulsurakan plays Nan in this. She doesn’t get a ton of screen time, but she’s fine here. Definitely not girlfriend material, but her acting is fine. Chanagun Arpornsutinan (Cupid’s Last Wish) is pretty decent as Tony, but it takes a while to really like his character at all. Rounding out the main cast we get Akalavut Mankalasut as Chang. He might actually be the best actor in this movie, but he gets very little screen time.

There are a few moral lessons we can draw from this flick.

1. Always have at least one friend that has your back no matter what happens.  Even if you are pretty terrible.

2. It might take more than one crossbow arrow to kill the villain.

3. If you live in Thailand maybe do a background check on your girl.

The pacing is good and for a 2-hour horror movie, there aren’t a lot of wasted sequences outside of the opening, which again makes no sense at all.

Overall NIGHT OF THE KILLER BEARS is a 4 out of 7. Yes, it’s weird and a lot of it doesn’t make any sense, but as a slasher, it’s not completely terrible. You will have to read subtitles if you don’t speak the language. If you are going to have this in your Halloween Horror-o-Thon make sure your group is okay with reading subtitles and this is probably better as an early in the day or evening movie. I wouldn’t pick it for a finale.
