JURASSIC SHARK 2: THE AQUAPOCALYPSE (2021)

JURASSIC SHARK 2: THE AQUAPOCALYPSE (2021)

Tagline: The Second Time's The Chum

(Action, Bad Acting, Foam Shark Fin) [PG-13]

Note: This movie was not given an MPA rating. It likely would have landed a PG-13.

It’s an animal, all animals bleed and die.

In this one, the Boswell Corporation released a prehistoric shark while drilling for oil on platform 27. The giant shark is now prowling the ocean for victims and no one is safe in spite of the corporation’s efforts to contain it. The corporation’s agents Dadds and Parks are sent out to deal with the problem because no matter what, the drilling must continue.

First off, any time you see something from Wild Eye, just know it’s going to be super low-budget stuff you could probably make on your own. From the opening shot, we get really bad CGI of a flashback dinosaur getting eaten by the prehistoric shark. I am pretty sure they were going for a Megalodon, but they never mention “Megalodon” in the entire movie. They do mention that the shark is 50 to 60 feet long which matches a Megalodon size apparently, but there is nothing in this movie outside of the opening sequence that would make you believe we are ever dealing with a shark that size.

Effects wise the shark is usually bad CGI, and occasionally a puppet. The dorsal fin is almost always shown as a foam-looking hand-held prop. All of the explosions are cheesy CGI, but to be honest, most B-movies do this nowadays. I guess it’s super expensive to blow real stuff up. Another issue with the CGI is if they were showing the shark underwater. I would think at least focus on trying to match the watercolor to all the other underwater shots. They don’t even bother with that.

Cinematically the only decent shots are of the shore with boats done by drones. We also get a pretty cool shot at the 56-minute mark, but nearly everything else is really janky looking. I have zero doubt you could take your smartphone and shoot a better film in your backyard.

If there is one good part in this, I did think it was pretty funny how the finale plays out. It’s actually pretty hysterically bad which is good compared to the rest of the movie which isn’t even really trying. I think that Jamie Morgan who plays Parks at least looks like she was having a little more fun than usual in this role. The same can be said for Titus Himmelberger who plays a crotchety bossy Marina owner. This is also another Polonia Brothers movie where Himmelberger’s wife Natalie Himmelberger shows up in a small role as a news reporter. Natalie has been showing up in more and more Wild Eye movies in the past 3 years or so.

One of the weirder things about this one is that they squeezed in a scene where some dude is just taking pictures of women on a beach. They also snuck in a few girls we don’t normally see in these films swimming and getting killed by this weird puppet/foam shark they like to use. I think they threw this stuff in because they really didn’t have a full script and they wanted the movie to at least be over an hour.

Overall this is a bit worse than the original so it’s going to land at a 3 out of 7, because it’s not “barely watchable”. If you go for Polonia Brothers cheese you are already used to the kind of nonsense you are going to get with this. It’s definitely not as terrible as some of the others this group has put out. Yes, I am talking to you SHARKULA…don’t look at me like that. Go back to your corner and think about what you’ve done.
