MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT (2018)

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT (2018)

Tagline: Some missions are not a choice.

(Action, Adventure, Where are my Nukes) [PG-13]

We're in this mess because Ethan wouldn't let me die. He's a good man. And he cares about you. More than he can admit. That's one more worry than he can handle right now. If you care about him, you should walk away.

This story takes place two years after Ethan Hunt captured Solomon Lane. Now every government and seemingly every agency wants Lane. He gets transferred from one high-security undisclosed location to one high-security undisclosed location all the time. An organization called the Apostles wants him most though being the remnant of the fallen Syndicate. John Lark is the leader, but the prevailing suspicion is that Lark is Ethan Hunt’s alter ego. Now Hunt must clear his name and obtain some plutonium they let slip away in a botched mission. Who is the real mastermind behind it all, and what the heck is Ilsa doing here? This whole thing is just impossible…mission impossible.

Okay, to be honest, I didn’t think this series could improve after how amazing ROGUE NATION was, but this thing is even better. Not only do we get to see Ethan and Ilsa (who is just flinging people around and chocking everyone with her lets and stabbing dudes in the torso, it’s awesome) back in action in an ever-complicated world of espionage, but we also get Julia (his now former wife) back, Michelle Monaghan (BLACK SITE) kill this role once again, she actually gets to be in more than just a quick cameo. The addition of Henry Cavill (MAN OF STEEL) as August Walker is epic. Needless to say with a production like this everyone’s acting is absolutely incredible.

Cinematically this thing is a gem we rarely get on screen even in the best of the 007 films. I mean, so far from all the stuff I’ve seen, this thing is the “king” of spy films. The action is even more over the top than in the last movie, with freakin sky diving out of planes, motorcycles, car chases, and helicopter battles, it’s freaking astonishing. My love for this movie is pretty crazy and I can’t wait to buy the entire series asap.

If this thing has a flaw built into the detonator being too simplistic. If you were going to make it that simple, it feels like it would have been a feature, not a design flaw. I also don’t really buy that the IMF (Impossible Mission Force) would have allowed something that happens to Julia in this movie without vetting it. This installment sees the return of Simon Pegg as Benji. I have liked him from the beginning, but he is particularly great at this. We also get more Luther, which means Ving Rhames is back and it’s never a bad idea to have him in your movie. Sean Harris returns as Lane, but if there was one drop in performance it would be the way Harris played Lane in the first film and the way he played Lane in this. Angela Bassett gets introduced as Erika Sloane. We have no freakin idea if we can trust her. Angela nails the role. I am not sure if she will be back but Vanessa Kirby was great as The White Widow.

The pacing is very good, but I think they could have cut this down by 20 minutes and gotten nearly the same effect. Tom Cruise had to train for a year for some of the stunts involved. This is at least the second film maybe even the third where he was injured doing stunts. A lot of the scenes took way longer than expected and Rebecca Ferguson who plays Ilsa was pregnant during the shooting of the film. So all around there was just some incredible dedication to getting this thing done. All of that fortunately shows up on screen and what they ended up with was basically a cinematic triumph.

Overall you probably already figured out this is a 7 out of 7. Watch this thing on the biggest screen you can find.
