BLEEDING STEEL (2017)

BLEEDING STEEL (2017)

Tagline: One man must unravel the past to save the future.

(Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller) [R]

My blood contains two sets of memories for 13 years. Those painful memories constantly tortured me day by day. You will have three memories once I pass them on to you. And believe me, you will go insane.

This one is about a couple of scientists that come up with an artificial heart idea that also pumps regenerative blood. Andre (one of the scientists) decides to get experimented on regarding the artificial heart and ends up starting a massive gang with an army of high-tech soldiers with his newfound strength and power. His mission is to recover the technology that the other scientist Dr. James, used to create the regenerative blood is relentless. Officer Lin (Jackie Chan) is part of an elite police outfit designed to deal with the threat and protect Dr. James. Meanwhile, Officer Lin’s daughter is dying while all this is going on.

Just reading the intro for this thing, you can probably tell it’s totally nuts. This movie almost feels like a Japanese version of G.I. JOE. Most of the movie takes place in Sydney Australia near and even “on” the Sydney Opera House. The villains are ridiculously over the top and the opening alone is just bonkers. I mean, there are a lot of movies out there that can’t even top the opening scenes.

While Jackie Chan who plays Officer Lin does a lot of the heavy lifting, the cast also features Na-Na OuYang who plays Nancy. I don’t want to give the plot away too much, but she is a central character in the film and everyone ends up being after her. This is a very solid effort for Na-Na OuYang who has only been acting in major films since 2014. So far, outside of this movie, I don’t think she’s done anything that really hit the U.S. market. Tess Haubrich plays a crazy henchwoman in this simply referred to as the woman in black. She has been in a lot of stuff, but I am not that familiar with her other work. Show Lo who seems to be more of a comedic actor plays Leeson plays an outrageous and criminal good guy (I guess) helper for Nancy as a sort of weird big brother type. Overall the acting is so so, but we do get enough good performances to make this really fun.

This thing is a LOT more over the top than I expected and has a great deal of sci-fi stuff going on. It’s apparently set in 2020, but we are talking tech that is even more intense than anything S.H.E.I.L.D. in the MCU has. With an ultra fast-paced plotline, it is sometimes hard to keep up with all that is going on. In that way, it reminded me a bit of THE ROOKIES only less chaotic. As stated earlier, the opening scene alone gives the rest of the movie some work to do since it almost feels like a finale.

If you liked G.I. JOE at all, this is like a cops versus crazy villains version of that with added humor and you should have a total blast. As a Jackie Chan fan, this was a must-see for me.

Overall I give BLEEDING STEEL a 6 out of 7. It’s just a lot of crazy over-the-top nonsense, but it’s massively entertaining.
