(Action, Sci-fi, Aliens Will Eat Your Face) [PG-13]

In this one everyday life is suddenly interrupted by people from our future telling us that we are facing an alien invasion that will wipe out the planet if we don’t help. At first, the world bonds together, and soldiers with fighting experience are sent into the future, but over time, regular citizens are needed as only a small percentage of those sent survive their 7-day tour in the future. Dan Forester (played by Chris Pratt best known for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) is part of the recruited. Dan has some fighting experience but will need the help of his father, a scientist and military leader,  a man named Charlie (played by Sam Richardson), and a militant bad-a-s named Dorian (played by Edwin Hodge). Oh yeah, and one high school brainiac, don’t forget that kid. Oh man, this thing is a freakin ride. Can a bunch of ordinary people save the planet?

First off everyone is talking about this movie for a reason. It was actually meant for and should have been a theatrical release, but Paramount ended up selling it to Amazon due to the pandemic of 2020. For this reason, the effects are just over the top incredible. This thing packs all the punch of a "blockbuster aliens will eat your face while the world explodes and Stevie Nicks is singing the background". Stevie Nicks isn't in the movie, but she gets a hilarious mention. This movie is also loaded with emotion and really what amounts to a great message for everyone.

Pratt’s performance shows a great deal of range and the character development for him, his daughter and Charlie are a big focus that delivers in every aspect. We also get a fantastic performance out of Ryan Kiera Armstrong who is also in BLACK WIDOW and has been cast as Charlie in the FIRESTARTER remake. Yeah- she’s that good with not a ton of screen time here. Edwin Hodge is also epic in this as is Sam Richardson. There really aren’t any letdowns. We also have a J.K. Simmons sighting and he’s solid as heck. He’s also not trying to sell us State Farm Insurance which is always welcome.

I really can’t say enough good things about this movie, the action sequences are mind-blowing and the pacing is perfection. In spite of the 2 hour and 20 minute run time, everything moves along at a pretty breakneck speed after the 35 minute or so introductions to the characters. I have seen a lot of Chris Pratt performances, he’s literally one of my favorite actors alive right now, but this one is simply incredible. In spite of the levity of the situation, the little injections of humor in this thing make it an absolute blast to watch. It’s NOT a downer or something you will need therapy to get over after you watch it.

This is a fantastic movie for anyone over 13 that likes big action flicks with heart, and doesn’t mind what are some of the craziest looking aliens we have seen since the ’80s. I mean these things are the stuff of nightmares. I will say this movie also features one of the best alien kills ever filmed. For me, this was an easy 7 out of 7 without question. Some critics might complain about the realism of certain plot elements, but this is a sleek streamlined sci-fi flick for the ages.

If this ever comes out of BLU-RAY I am buying it fast.
