ATTACK OF THE MOON ZOMBIES (2011)

ATTACK OF THE MOON ZOMBIES (2011)

Tagline:  An ancient evil returns to infect mankind ... on the MOON!

(Sci-Fi, Goofy Horror, Throwback) [G]

Note – This movie doesn’t have a rating from the MPAA, however, it if did, it would definitely be a G.

In this one, Dr. Vincent Edwards is getting ready to retire and they have just brought in his replacement on a moon base, who is a young and super quiet genius. Edwards discovers a plant-like object on the surface and it doesn’t take long before the young genius is infected with spores after getting too close to the plant. The spores kill him and turn him into a moon zombie with one deadly purpose…to continue to reproduce via one dead human body at a time. Can Dr. Hackett, her new fiancĂ© along with Dr. Edwards and Administrator Ripley escape the planet in time?

This is another love letter to the sci-fi budget films of the 1950s. When Christopher R. Mihm (who directed and wrote this) is at the helm, you know you are going to get something pretty close to the cuff and freakin fantastic on a bargain-basement budget. No…I mean literally this movie was shot in his basement. Oddly Mihm still ends up putting out something ridiculously fun and reminiscent of the films of the sci-fi glory days.

I am not going to say that you are going to be blown away by the minimalistic approach to this genre, but the mask work, music, and even the fact that it's shot completely in black and white is just epic. In this one, the stand-out performances come from Shannon McDonough as Dr. Hackett and Michael Cook as Dr. Vincent Edwards who seem to have been ripped out of time and space to specifically and masterfully act out these roles in wildly overdramatic 50’s style. The rest of the performances are pretty good but I was quickly annoyed by Daniel Sjerven as Captain Herman Frehley. Not the person, but the fake accent and attitude of the character. I literally wanted this dude to be a zombie first so I didn’t have to hear him. There was also a slight nod in the script to KISS since Captain Frehley wanted to be called “Ace”. Ace Frehley was known as “The Spaceman” in KISS, so this was pretty fitting.

What I love about this flick in particular is that the dialog completely acknowledges what this is. ATTACK OF THE MOON ZOMBIES is completely self-aware and that helps keep this thing wildly entertaining outside of a few scenes where the dialog was overdone. The opening itself is pretty fantastic just regarding the banter back and forth between Dr. Hackett and Administrator Ripley (which I also think was probably a purposeful nod to ALIENS).

If you go into this expecting a low-budget blast from the past you will have a great time. Even just the moon zombie mask designs are worth watching this thing. I give this movie a 5 out of 7, but I have also become quite a fan of these films so keep that in mind. If you love 1950’s sci-fi nonsense, you should absolutely love this.
