THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (2007)

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (2007)

Tagline:  The movie event 18 years in the making.

(Animation, Adventure, Comedy) [PG-13]

The worst day of your life so far.

Apparently, after 148 to 150 attempts at a script, the crew making THE SIMPSONS came up with this plotline. Homer ends up saving a pig from certain death and decides to stupidly dump the pig's waste in Lake Springfield. That and a bunch of other accumulating waste before that, end up being the tipping point that gets all of Springfield trapped in a giant dome by the EPA. It gets discovered that Homer is at fault and his family finds a way to escape to Alaska via a sinkhole in their yard. Will Homer regain the respect of his family and his town before Springfield has to be eliminated altogether?

There are actually some videos out there detailing the fall of Homer as a likable character. I personally stopped watching THE SIMPSONS back in 1996, but finding out there was a movie coming out got my attention and I ended up seeing this in the theaters and ultimately buying it. This movie did almost nothing to help my opinion of Homer. He’s a full-blown jerk. Fortunately, the rest of the family aside from maybe Bart is likable as is the rest of the nutty fictional town that is Springfield.

One thing this movie does well is capitalizing on what made the show great when it first came out. There are tons of background gags and humorous moments throughout that are just total nonsense. The movie even takes jabs at Disney which now actually owns the rights to the Simpsons and a ton of FOX properties. There are shots taken at the government etc. Another thing they did right was bringing back all the main voice actors from the show. They also painted Flanders (the show’s most recognizable Christian) in a positive light in this one. This balances out Homer popping off about God being dumb in the opening scene.

Looking back at this thing 14 years after buying it I really don’t have the affection I did for this movie back then. I think after watching shows like BOB’S BURGERS do this type of stuff far better and without taking shots at faith and culture it makes this movie less endearing but doesn’t necessarily hurt the humor. What was funny then is still largely funny now but moments like the “spider pig” segment just don’t resonate with me anymore.

Art wise the Simpsons has always been near the bottom in regards to detail, but they did a few cool scenes in this using some CGI work to give them more of a 3D feel. I do wish they had done a bit more of this, but what we got made it more like a Simpson’s movie, than just a really long episode.

Overall this movie is a fun watch on occasion and I don’t regret owning it, but there are some stand-alone episodes that are better. There was a hint that there would be a second Simpson’s movie after this one, but as of the writing of this review, that still hasn’t happened. I give this movie a 3 out of 7 especially knowing what this creation crew was capable of.
