PSYCHO GOREMAN (2021)

PSYCHO GOREMAN (2021)

Tagline:  Little Girl, Big Psycho

(Sci-Fi, Dark Humor, Horror) [R]

The horrors you have just witnessed cannot be unseen. Your young minds will carry this until it consumes you in a miserable death.

In this one, a couple of kids discover an amulet that controls one of the most evil beings ever named Psycho Goreman. Controlled by Mimi (played by Nita-Josee Hanna) Psycho Goreman is forced to participate in Mimi’s childish whims which have some humorous and dark results. Will Mimi let her power over Goreman go to her head destroying her family, or will she finally wake up and stop being a full-blown jerk.

When checking out all of the awesome previews of movies that were going to be delivered in 2021, I was pretty intrigued by the premise and preview for this one. It looked like we getting an enormously funny movie with some gritty, but ultimately lighthearted tugs at the sci-fi monster movie genre. When you watch this damn thing, you quickly realize the trailer was misleading and the movie is basically a full-blown gorefest. While the movie does contain some funny moments, the life of this movie is sucked out ever so aggressively like an annoying 3rd grader slurping kale soup. Not only are the funny moments ruined by choppy un-funny dialog, but the only 2 likable characters in this movie get treated like absolute dirt the entire time.

The good - What is strong about this movie is the effects. We do get some crazy 80’s style outlandish bizarre off the rails effects (gore-wise) and in the costume department. As a fan of prosthetics and design work, I did think this thing succeeded on a lot of levels regarding that. The concept behind this movie was also pretty cool. A little girl controlling a galactic warlord, umm yeah, that idea was great. We also get a few decent songs and a montage that stood out as one of the only actual fun things about this movie. There is a band scene with Mimi, Psycho Gorman, and company that is pretty epic.

The bad – Everything other freaking thing about this movie sucks. The dialog outside of some of the dad's quirkiness sucks. The Godophobic crybaby scene where the director/writer decided to take a stab at bashing God, was not only unnecessary and didn’t fit the film. It demonstrates a deeper issue for the creators of this film that some poor shrink in Beverly Hills has to deal with. You know the one, “Dr. Everything'll-Be-Alright”. It makes me feel bad for anyone that has to be around them, or him, or her because that stick is pretty jammed up the anal cavity. I never cared that much, knowing we live in a secular world, it is what it is, but here it feels like this was a personal hemorrhoid for this studio, and I feel bad for whoever was involved in the decision. We are also unfortunately victimized by the fact that the main little girl in this movie we wanted to root for, we almost can’t wait to see shipped to Detroit. There are also some inexplicable moments in this movie including the very beginning and the reason Luke (played by a very competent Owen Myre) is even digging the hole they find the amulet in. Secondly – the person Mimi seems to like most in the world is turned into a giant brain and she seems to have absolutely zero issue with it. It’s not only melancholy, it’s full-blown disturbing.

I wanted to love this thing, but instead, I found it disheartening. Even the few great moments we get are quickly decimated by poor execution and overall dread. Even the ending is a downer. For me, this could have probably been a 3 out of 7 without the Godophobic BS, but when you take that into account it’s a 2 out of 7. I can’t recommend seeing this movie as cool as the idea was at the onset.
