DESPICABLE ME (2010)

DESPICABLE ME (2010)

He's so fluffy, I'm gonna die!

Wow, I just realized, I have owned this movie for 10 years now and have never written a review for it...till now. In this one a secretive super villain named Gru who has hundreds of tiny genetically engineered corn kernels (minions), lives in basically a regular neighborhood. He discovers one way he can get to a shrink ray he needs to pull of the biggest heist of all time is to infiltrate another villain’s lair named Vector. In order to do this he decides to utilize the cookie selling skills of three orphans (Margo (voiced by Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (voiced by Dana Gaier), and Agnes (voiced by Elsie Fisher) he’s decided to adopt.

This movie is amazingly creative and well written. One thing animated films in recent years have been able to do well is pull on the emotional heart strings of their audiences, but this one catches you a bit off guard in that most of the dialog is over the top and humorous. The main villain in the movie literally has a “squid gun” for instance. It shoots live squids. So when the emotions start kicking it endears the audience to the already likable characters even more. This is one of the few movies where the minions don’t end up basically stealing the show, but they are pretty awesome. This is also one of the seemingly few movies that isn’t faith based, that has come out that paints fathers in a positive light, as someone to be looked up to, that will do whatever it takes to protect those they love.

The artwork and design of this movie was so good for years I always kinda regarded this thing as a Disney or Pixar flick. It’s actually Universal Pictures' third computer animated movie after THE PIRATES WHO DON’T DO ANYTHING: A VEGGIE TALES MOVIE and THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX (2008). This movie feels like it could have easily been a stand-alone effort but the series as a whole maintains its artistic integrity and heartfelt storylines. Much of this is likely due to director Pierre Coffin being involved in every movie in the series thus far.

For its originality, emotional impact, characters, fun and creative design, I have to give DESPICABLE ME a 6 out 7. Still to this day, it’s still in the top 4 or 5 best films ever done by Illumination Entertainment.
