RISEN (2016)

RISEN (2016)

Tagline : Witness the manhunt that changed the course of human history.

When someone asks me to recommend a movie about faith, made with sincere motive, and with a cinematic quality that rivals well done secular films, my mind goes to PASSION OF THE CHRIST, but an even better film is RISEN which came out in 2016.

The movie overall covers the investigation that followed the crucifixion regarding the disappearance of the body of Jesus Christ.  The stories main character is Clavius, brilliantly played by Joseph Fiennes. His whole mission is to make sure there isn’t an uprising of believers in the idea that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. When it becomes apparent that Jesus’s body is nowhere to be found, the entire Roman Empire is shaken, and the hunt is on at all cost.

If you read the bible, you understand what happens after, but this is a story about what might have gone down, after Jesus rose from the dead in real life. Having said that this movie isn’t only for people of faith, it’s actually filmed in such a way that should intrigue anyone. The movie does not come across as a Sunday school lesson or preachy in any way. It’s expertly woven both cinematically and in regards to the acting. Every performance shines through and this is NOT something you can say about most every faith based film like this.

Regarding the acting, aside from Fiennes effort, we also get a decent performance out of Tom Felton as Lucius. Tom Felton is best known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the HARRY POTTER series. The movie also features the talent of Peter Firth (as Pilot), who was in everything from THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER to AMISTAD and is fantastic in this. Cliff Curtis who has recently been involved in the newer AVATAR movies and THE MEG among other roles, is also impressive as Yeshua (Jesus Christ).

In looking at things to critique, I could see at least one spot where some effects might have been cool, but outside of that this movie is near perfection in its execution and handling of the material. It also doesn’t hold back in some areas being given a PG-13 rating. The movie is also not overly long clocking in at just an hour and 47 minutes. I can’t give this movie anything but a 7 out of 7 and I find it more watchable than something like PASSION OF THE CHRIST , that I might watch once every few years if that. RISEN is simply mind-blowing, I can’t recommend it enough.
