BOUNTY KILLER (2013)

BOUNTY KILLER (2013)

First off when this movie tells you straight away that it is a cross between MAD MAX and KILL BILL, it’s not joking around. The storyline takes place in the future and corporations have taken over the world’s governments…wait…maybe this movie does take place in 2020? Someone want to check on that? Anyway, the corporations end up going to war against one another in something called the “corporate wars”. Those wars end up laying waste to society and everything ends up in sort of a dark age. From that the “Council Of Nine” develops. That group has some power and they issue death warrants against the corporations and “white-collar criminals”. Their assassins compete against one another for money, fame, and overall ridiculousness. They are the heroes of their day and they are known as Bounty Killers, hence the name of this freakin movie.

BOUNTY KILLER is extremely stylistic especially in the travel scenes between place to place and whenever the film shows a place called the “badlands”. This is likely because the movie is based on a graphic novel produced by Kickstarter. Director Henry Saine is most known for working in the art department of movies, but for this one, he is the director. It’s 1 of only 2 full movies he’s ever done. All the rest of the stuff he’s directed are shorts. He does give this thing a very Tarantino feel even down to his quaint music choices during certain scenes.

Overall this is a pretty fun movie and it’s paced in an awesomely fast way, fitting for the subject matter. Matthew Marsden is pretty great as “Drifter” the main character in this movie. He’s been around a while even appearing in RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION. His character is pretty likable as is his gun-caddy “Jack” (played by Barak Hardley). Another stand out is Kristanna Loken who plays Catherine. She is most famous for her role as T-X in TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES. The movie's other main character is Mary Death played by Christian Pitre. Some might say Mary is the character driving this movie, but unfortunately, there is very little to like about her as a character. I mean, this chick will stab anyone in the spleen and leave them to die.

Cinematically and in regards to acting, this movie doesn’t feel like a b-movie. Everything about it is outstanding and the action sequences are just really fun. Where the movie does suffer is the fact that we can tell by the end it’s a setup film, and there are parts that just seem over the top gross and unnecessary, that don’t even involve action. Also, I get the look the film was going for regarding Mary, but the last outfit we see her in would have been better all-around for this movie. As it is, she just looks like a moving target for anyone trying to take her out. She might as well just be wearing a giant bulls-eye. BOUNTY KILLER is definitely not for everyone, but if you liked MAD MAX or KILL BILL, then you are probably going to be all in.

For me, this movie is a 4 out of 7. Not something I would watch more than once in a 2-year span if that. However, for a lot of action fans, this would be a solid 5 out of 7. So take that for what it’s worth.
