PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN : DEAD MAN’S CHEST (2006)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST (2006)

Tagline: Captain Jack Is Back…

This is barbaric! This is no way for grown men to…Oh, Fine! Let’s just pull out our swords and start banging away at each other. That will solve everything! I’ve had it! I’ve had it with wobbly-legged, run-soaked PIRATES!

In this one Jack Sparrow endeavors to settle a blood debt to Davey Jones. Jones is the infamous captain of the ghostly ship, the Flying Dutchman. Faced with a potential afterlife of servitude and damnation with forced loyalty to the Dutchman’s crew of half-dead fish men, Jack of course has other plans. Pursed by Davy Jones and his pet “The Kracken”, Will and Elizabeth go to aid Jack but also want to get the chest first in order to save Will’s father from the clutches of the Dutchman. We also get a new villain in this one as head of the East India Trading Company named Beckett. His goal is to obtain the “heart” of Davy Jones thereby securing dominance of the sea.  Everybody got that? Because it took me like 3 times watching this to figure it all out.

The special effects in this one are something to behold. The storyline is better but more complicated and we finally get a big ocean creature to contend with. Quite frankly we needed a bit of Sinbad-ish flare if this series was going to improve upon itself. Elisabeth is a bit more bold in this movie, but she doesn’t yet have the punch we see in “THE WORLD’S END”. Jack is Jack and that’s good. The effects on Davy Jones are spectacular but I do wish we’d have gotten to see more of The Kraken. All we see in this thing are the tentacles, having said that, the fact that this idea was even introduced is a credit to the writers. If you liked the first one, you will love this one.

One overlooked character I think is Norrington (played by Jack Davenport). His character has an annoying role in this movie, but his fate is critical to the story later on.
This damn thing does slow a bit during a scene where they are stuck on an island and Jack is about to get cooked by natives. Finally, nothing prepared us for the abrupt ending and it leaves us with the desire to see more. In spite of its few issues, this movie is the perfect example of why we come to theaters.
