GODZILLA VS MEGAGUIRUS (2000)
Of course in this movie Godzilla is going to be jacking up Japan. They have a few weapons they are trying out, one of which makes a black hole. Yeah, you read that freakin right. It makes black holes. During testing suddenly inner-dimensional eggs show up and now we’ve got creatures coming out of them. It doesn’t take long before these creatures (about the size of a human) are attacking everyone they see. I mean this thing starts off more like a full blown horror flick than a Godzilla movie. Eventually these things start attacking Godzilla and ultimately combine into Megaguirus who looks a lot like Battra on crack.
Sadly in this damn thing the effects in parts are just really bad and you can see the strings holding up Megaguirus really well. We also get a ton of crazy slow motion shots during the Godzilla and Megaguirus fights. Some are okay, but most are incredibly awkward and unnecessary. It kind of sucks when you can go back 30 years and find better kaiju effects than we got in this one. Even for TOHO this was a letdown after GODZILLA 2000 was done so well. This movie also lacks some of the better camera angles and action sequences we got in Godzilla 2000.
The strong points in this movie are its story. I kind liked the out of the box thinking on this one with the black hole idea and the story flows well enough. You don’t get bored in this one waiting for Godzilla to show up. Megaguirus is a pretty rad looking villain in both forms, either the smaller creatures or his final form. I also have to give it points for containing one of the goofiest Godzilla jump into the air and land like 5 minutes later scenes in any Godzilla movie. I mean, it’s freakin hilarious. I also loved that this was a direct follow up to Godzilla 2000, so we got to see one of the better Godzilla designs one more time.
