GODZILLA VS MECHAGODZILLA (1974)

GODZILLA VS MECHAGODZILLA (1974)

In this one, aliens land on earth and of course when that happens in a Godzilla movie, they are freakin going after Japan. Of course if you are going to do that, you need a giant monster, so why not just make a fake Godzilla in case the real one shows up. This movie also had a World Wide release under the title of GODZILLA VS COSMIC MONSTER, so if you see that, that is this one.

There are a couple versions of this, but the one I watched has a pretty well-lit shot of Anguirus just hanging out in some snowy mountains. They spend some time giving us a backstory for King Ceasar (who kinda looks like a deranged samurai Easter Bunny, with rainbow lasers and old school break lights for eyes) which is part of a prophecy. He’s probably one of my favorite Kaiju but sadly isn’t in much. The idea is that when the sun rises in the West, you have to sing a song and he’s just gonna come out and beat up stuff up along with another monster. King Ceasar needs help because when it comes to Kaiju, he’s just “okay”. He literally specializes in an “attack with your face” move. Mechagodzilla comes out of Mt. Fuji and is being controlled by some humanoid aliens. The aliens pretty much look like they stole their look from the PLANET OF THE APES “rejected costume idea” closet, when the get exposed.

The human storyline in this is pretty decent in spite of the crazy plot, but if you watch a lot of Godzilla flicks, this one is actually pretty on target. Reiko Tajima is also in this one (as Saeko Kanagusuku, the lady who gives the prophecy) and was still active on animation projects as of 2019 at the age of 71. She also made a brief appearance in GAMERA : SUPER MONSTER.

There is also a scene in here where Godzilla is seemingly energized by several bolts of lightning. Something similar happened to King Kong in KING KONG VS GODZILLA. So apparently you don’t need a giant Monster energy drink if you are a Kaiju, you just need to get super lucky and get stuck by lightning. The lightning also gives Godzilla another random power (or maybe Godzilla already has this power and doesn’t use it often*), but you need to watch for yourself. Also for a Godzilla movie, this damn thing just has a ton of blood.

I have to give this movie a 5 out of 7. The over the top storyline, mostly straightforward acting and action sequences are some of the better ones for Godzilla movies of this time period.

* = The opening montage of TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA seems to indicate that Godzilla “summoned this power”.|
