GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA (2002)
The translated tagline for this thing is literally “Fight Until It’s Smashed Up!” Gotta love that.
To protect Japan from a Godzilla attack they decide,” welp, were just going to make a mechanical human-piloted cyborg, codenamed Kiriyu”. For this they use the skeleton of the original Godzilla, because in this one, once again, screw the other movies. I guess in this Godzilla universe they don’t have the benefit of knowing this damn plan has been tried three times before (twice by aliens) and failed.
Some oddities about this one include one of the Gargantuas briefly being mentioned and this little girl suggesting that Kiriyu (MECHAGODZILLA) wants to be friends with Godzilla? Also her mom is a plant now or something. The human story is pretty weak and basically just involves Akane Yashiro (played by Yumiko Shaku) trying to make it as part of the “let’s kill Godzilla” team after being blamed for an incident where some of her team died.
Directing wise I could have done without some of the goofy slow motion scenes, but fortunately not much of that happens here. I also wasn’t crazy about some of the strange speed and jumping ability that Mechagodzilla had in this one. Not that I am expecting regular physics. I could give a crap about that in a Godzilla movie, but it wasn’t necessary for this film.
This movie’s strong points however are the overall acting, straightforward story and a significant improvement effects wise over pretty much every Godzilla movie that proceeded it. Even Godzilla’s radioactive breath just looks freaking epic. Mechagodzilla is awesome looking and this suit for Godzilla overall is one of the stronger designs in the entire series. This movie also has a better opening sequence than a lot of other Godzilla flicks.
I have to give this one a 6 out of 7. It’s not perfect and it’s not original, but it is a very solid movie.
