DEMOLITION MAN (1993)

DEMOLITION MAN (1993)

Tagline: The future isn't big enough for the both of them.

(Action, Sci-Fi, Taco Bell) [R]

Okay, pal? I've seen the future, you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sittin' around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake singing "I'm an Oscar-Meyer Wiener".

This movie basically revolves around a cop named John Spartan (played by Sylvester Stallone) being put in a cryogenic prison after hunting down and capturing a criminal named Simon Phoenix (played by Wesley Snipes) who also ends up in the same cryogenic prison. During the chase unfortunately a lot of hostages die in the incident and that is how Spartan gets sentenced. Fast forward to the future (2032) and now pretty much everyone is a wuss and violence really isn’t a thing. Utopia has been fashioned by a man named Dr. Raymond Cocteau (played by Nigel Hawthorne) and his only real nemesis is a guy that wants food and Cigars named Edgar Friendly (played by Denis Leary). Phoenix is defrosted but soon proves to be too much for LA’s police to handle.

The future in this movie is pretty accurate in some senses. Certain groups are policing what we say and don’t say and how it is said, trying to get rid of violence, and having “safe spaces” are all either explored or hinted at in this thing. What ends up being way off though is a futuristic bathroom idea that involves 3 sea shells of all things since toilet paper isn’t a thing. For some reason Taco Bell is the only restaurant around and we still don’t have foam that fills your car and suddenly hardens when your car crashes.

The action sequences in this movie sometimes feel long and drug out, but most of the dialog resembles something very early 90’s which is what you want in a 90’s movie. I also dug some of the style choices for the vehicles. The cop cars had a covered back wheel with a police shield on it. Even just that little attention to detail is far more interesting than just about every “real-life” car style we are getting nowadays. It seems car body styles are one of a list of things not really advancing in the past 30 years.

Overall this movie is fun and interesting, but it’s nothing mind-blowing and the twists are not anything you would be like “Well, crap, I didn’t see that coming”. Stallone’s had better flicks and Snipes's hair is distracting rather than menacing. Having said that DEMOLITION MAN has become a bit of a classic so I will give it a 4 out of 7.
