DOCTOR STRANGE (2016)
I actually caught this movie in Cypress, CA when I was there. Of all the Marvel movies to date, this is perhaps the most “Screw Science” of them all and I love that about this thing. I am not anti-science in any way, but I am pro going beyond what we see or think we know and this movie highlights that thought process in spades.
Dr. Steven Strange gets in a accident and no longer has the use of his hands. In a desperate effort to regain his livelihood he decides to a healer in Tibet is the best option. He doesn’t run into a yeti but whatever, that’s fine, I was just really hoping he’d run into one.
Anyway, that journey leads to the discovery that Kaecilius (played by Mads Mikkelsen) is a huge jerk and wants to live forever with a being known as Dormammu (who is like an awesome villain in the comics) who he feels can give him eternal life. Doctor Strange also runs into The Ancient One (played by Tilda Swinton) and the jerk from Serenity (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who plays Mordo. Apparently there was a temper tantrum over the casting of Tilda Swinton, but these days there is a temper tantrum about everything, so who cares. Overall the acting in this one is pretty great, but just about everything in this film is out-done by the superb world bending special effects.
This storyline stands on it’s own extremely well, but complaints about the main villain Dormammu being almost too powerful in the film are actually pretty substantiated. The overall plot however is pretty strong as well as the villains motive if you understand that most villains are not rational and don’t have rational motives, nor do they “need” on to do what they are attempting to do. Character building is huge in this one a lot like it was in IRON MAN and that alone makes this movie worth watching. Rachel McAdams is also in this movie as Dr. Christine Palmer, but appears to be another Marvel throw away character as it doesn’t look like she will be in DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS at all. Then again everyone also thought Jane Foster was a throw away character as well, and that isn’t the case now, so we will have to see.
For it’s groundbreaking special effects, strong acting (especially Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange), excellent message and overall story line, Doctor Strange is a clear 7 out of 7 for me. So far, definitely a top 10 entry in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) thus far.
