THE AVENGERS (2012)
This movie was a culmination of several set up movies
finally leading to a much anticipated team up between Captain America, Thor,
Black Widow, Hawkeye, The Hulk and Iron Man. Black Widow and Hawkeye to that
point had only appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) prior. To this
point Black Widow still hasn’t had a solo movie but will have one coming out
next year (2020). It’s a long time coming. Anyway, Loki is pretty hell bent on
getting revenge on Thor after the events in the movie Thor so he gets rather
willingly “enlisted” by Thanos to lead an army of aliens. We don’t see Thanos
until the mid-credit scene so don’t get super excited if you like Mad Titans
planning to kill have the living things in the universe. S.H.I.E.L.D. put
together the Avengers to attack these sorts of threats and it’s up to them to
save the planet.
After decades of waiting The Avengers is the quintessential comic book movie of its time. I saw this in theaters and when the title credits came on…fans were literally out of their seats cheering. Joss Whedon (probably best known for Firefly and Buffy The Vampire Slayer) killed it writing and directing this thing. Even for a comic book movie there are relatively few plot holes in this thing. The action sequences are mind-blowing, and in spite of it’s almost 2 and a half hour run time, the movie moves quickly. After watching this thing probably 20 times now, I still think The Hulk steals the show, but it was nice to see Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, and a more well-rounded role for Black Widow. There was also a good amount of back and forth ego wise for the group which mirrored the comic books stories rather well.

I will say the Chitauri (aliens) in the movie look a little “basic” for such a big production. The ships used by the Chitauri look ridiculously similar to the Decepticon ships in TRANSFORMERS : DARK OF THE MOON which came out a year earlier. The Hulk also looks a lot less fierce than the Norton version almost to the point of looking more like a pissed of SHREK than a menacing threat to save civilization from oncoming hordes. So design wise I wish they would have gone with some different choices, but overall those are very very small details that didn’t affect my enjoyment of this movie at all. THE AVENGERS is a clear 7 out of 7 for me and re-watching it reminds me just how fantastic this flick is.
