YESTERDAY (2019)

YESTERDAY (2019)

This one starts off in Lowestoft UK, with Jack Malik struggling as a musician to make ends meet and even just get a gig. On his way home one night, the entire world suffers a blackout and Jack soon discovers by chance that The Beatles, Oasis, Coke, and a few other things only he knows about, no longer exist. Strangely the film gives no explanation for this, but outside of that, this movie is witty, humorous, and fun movie making. Jack is played by Himesh Patel who to this point has done mostly TV series but holds his own as a lead in this movie. His manager and long-time friend Ellie Appleton is played by Lily James mostly known for her role in Disney’s live version of CINDERELLA. But I never watched that, so I am also just going to say she was also Elizabeth Bennet in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE ZOMBIES a movie I actually did watch.

Anyway… it doesn’t take long before Jack has remembered enough Beatles songs to build success just on that, but will it all come crashing down? The film does a great job of asking us what is important in life and what defines success. Are the best things in life right in front of our eyes? Direction wise this movie is shot pretty straightforwardly. There are no real groundbreaking moments here, but that is all negated as being necessary with a blast of a script and just enough real-life negatives, to contrast against the brightly lit subject matter. Characters like Debra Hammer (played by Kate McKinnon from GHOSTBUSTERS) and real-life musician Ed Sheeran as himself help keep this thing grounded and forces the decisions Jack must make. The original script was a bit darker exploring an alternate timeline etc, but I am glad it was simplified to this version. I do wish however they would have at least mentioned it in the movie, or at least provided a reason the world forgot these things.

This movie has a little bit of everything on the emotional scale but is largely something you walk out of with a giant smile on your face. I can’t say enough good about this one. It’s stunning all around, and a definite 7 out of 7. It’s a movie I would definitely love to own.
