ALADDIN (2019)
If you saw the original Disney version of this movie
(because several versions have been done) you already know the plot of this
thing. A dude named Aladdin is asked to find a treasure in the cave of wonders
that contains a genie. Rather than giving it to this sinister dude Jafar that
put him up to the whole thing, Aladdin rubs the treasure (it’s a lamp) and gets
3 wishes.
I went into this thing expecting to freakin hate it. I like Will Smith (INDEPENDENCE DAY), I like Naomi Scott (POWER RANGERS, LEMONADE MOUTH), but the thought of Disney continuing on this never-ending quest to update their classic animated movies just bugs me. I’d rather they focused on new properties and new adventures. However, this freakin movie is fantastic. I loved the way they handled it and the 3 main parts Aladdin (played by Mena Massoud), Jasmine (played by Naomi Scott), and the genie (played by Will Smith). They are all convincing and well done.
Probably the most genius move in this whole movie was probably throwing in an extra song for Jasmine to sing that we don’t get in the original. The song is called “Speechless” and Naomi Scott actually sings it herself. This Jasmine is much more her own woman than what we got in the animated version and instead of feeling forced to play to a PC crowd, it comes across as very genuine and just really freakin fantastic. Another thing I just loved about this movie was Rajah (Jasmine’s tiger), the effect team nailed it on this one. We do get a few CGI issues whenever the genie is blue and shown close up. It just doesn’t look right, but most non-close-ups look pretty good and the musical numbers where spectacle is involved are over the top incredible.
As you can tell I just really enjoyed this thing and haven’t talked to anyone that didn’t. Well played Disney. You proved me wrong and shattered my expectations. Was this never version of Aladdin better than the original? Overall yes, but one let down was the newer version of Jafar. I just felt he wasn’t “evil” enough for the role. He was like 1/3rd as evil as the animated Jafar and you want your bad guys to be characters you would like to see get a beat down. My other issue with this one was the ending. It just lacked a bit of punch that we got in the animated version. Overall this one lands at a 5 out of 7 for me. It’s a great time at the theaters if you get a chance to go see it, but I don’t know if I will be buying it personally.
